New Children’s Book to Challenge Stereotypes: A Black Father and His 5-Year-Old Daughter

Must Read

Nationwide — Dontaye Carter has partnered with his five-year-old daughter, Kyleigh, to center Black fatherhood and a strong Black family with their new children’s book, My Daddy and Me.

As the Founder and Lead Communication Strategist of Carter Media Group (CMG), Dontaye is a pioneer in the world of Public Relations and Communications from his exceptional work in elevating the voices of the families of the survivors of R. Kelly to elevating the voices of the family of Ahmaud Arbery. In fact, his passion, experience, and results have garnered international attention, including three prestigious awards from the 26th Annual Communicators Awards.

While Dontaye has been a pioneer in public relations (PR), politics, and social justice, his daughter, Kyleigh, has been right by his side. At the age of two, her daycare was closed, like many businesses, institutions, and much of the world due to the pandemic in 2020. However, the pandemic couldn’t stop the acts of racial injustice. When the Atlanta NAACP called Dontaye’s firm to help raise awareness about Ahmaud Arbery’s case, the duo responded. Kyleigh traveled with her father so much that many people eventually asked, “When are you going to tell this story, Dontaye?”

He comments, “There’s been no title that I’m prouder to wear than Dad. Everything that I do comes from a desire to leave this world better for my daughter than what I inherited. However, I’m not the only Black father fighting to protect my family and provide for them. As Kyleigh and I sat down to write this book and she told me what she saw in me; it was the same thing I saw in every Black father I encounter day to day. We often feel unseen, unheard, and devalued, but this is an opportunity to add hope, love, and strength to a narrative that is often only seen through the lens of hip-hop and gang life. My daughter told me that I was her hero. And I know for a fact we have millions of Black fathers who are seen as heroes, and that’s what this book is about celebrating.”

Dontaye’s clients have been featured in Time Magazine, New York Times, BBC, Lifetime, Good Morning America, and many other publications and media outlets.

He launched his firm in 2017 and once led the PR department in the Fulton County DA’s office. For ten years before the DA’s Office, he worked in television news as an Executive Producer, Anchor, and Reporter across the Southeast and Midwest. His career includes working in Atlanta at CBS46 and 11Alive, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at FOX23, and in Tallahassee, Florida, at WCTV.

When Kyleigh isn’t tagging along with Daddy, she’s working diligently to set up playdates. When Dontaye isn’t wearing his CMG hat, he’s serving as the Communications Chair for the Georgia NAACP, on the Board of Directors of the PTO at Kyleigh’s school, and on the Board of Directors of CURE Childhood Cancer.

The Carter’s new book, My Daddy and Me, will be released on July 28th.
