Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has been handed a four-year ban after testing positive for doping, according to reports from Sky in Italy.
The Italy’s National Anti-Doping Tribunal (TNA) accepted the request from the Anti-Doping Prosecutor’s Office for the standard four-year ban under the World Anti-Doping Code (WADA).
The ban is effective from the date of the first positive test, meaning Pogba is banned until August 2027. With the ban ending when he is 34 years old, there are doubts about the continuation of his career after that.
Sky in Italy reports that Pogba plans to appeal this decision to the Court of Arbitration of Sport (CAS) in Lausanne. If he appeals to CAS, WADA will also appeal. The final decision could end up in the Swiss courts.
The 30-year-old Juventus player was suspended in September 2023 after testing positive for testosterone metabolites in August, following a game against Udinese on August 20. He did not play in the match but was on the bench.
Reports from Sky Sports News in October stated that Pogba intended to clear his name after testing positive for Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). His agent Rafaela Pimenta claimed “Paul never intended to break the rules.”
Pogba requested a counter-analysis of his doping test, which also returned a positive result.
In December, anti-doping prosecutors in Italy requested the maximum four-year ban following his positive test.
Pogba chose not to make a plea deal with the anti-doping agency, leading to a trial in the country’s anti-doping court.
A four-year ban can be reduced in cases where an athlete proves it was unintentional, due to contamination, or provides assistance to investigators.
