President of Rugby Africa, Herbert Mensah has emphasized that Ghana should be considered as a host for future World Rugby competitions due to the nation’s potential to become a prominent destination for international sporting events.
He pointed out that Ghana now boasts the foremost international standard rugby stadium in West Africa, making it a suitable candidate for hosting world rugby tournaments.
Mr. Mensah made these comments during a press briefing organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports on the sidelines of the ongoing 13th All African Games being held in the country.
“As President of Rugby Africa, I will propose to my board and the Council for World Rugby that Ghana should be a venue for hosting world competitions, given the maintenance of the facilities. Ghana has the capability to host at least 2 or 3 World Rugby competitions,” Mensah stated, highlighting Ghana’s preparedness to host prestigious rugby tournaments.
He commended the government’s investment in the state-of-the-art facility at the University of Ghana Rugby Stadium in Accra, as a testament to the commitment to sports development in the country. He also praised the government’s overall investments in facilities that could enhance Ghana’s reputation as a hub for international rugby events.
“The government deserves recognition for organizing such excellent games. In sports, off-field investments are crucial for on-field success,” he remarked.
He expressed confidence that such infrastructure would not only benefit local athletes but also bring pride and recognition to Ghana across Africa.
Ghana is hosting the All-African Games for the first time, with over 5,000 elite athletes from 54 African countries competing in 25 different sport codes, including swimming, cricket, football, volleyball, and more.
The inclusion of Rugby Sevens in the tournament lineup has added excitement to the African Games.
