Here’s the reason why RDC World, a popular YouTube gaming channel, attracted 20K gamers to DreamCon in Texas

When Marcus “Mark” Vincent Phillips Jr. and Affiong “Aff” Harris created their RDCworld1 YouTube channel in 2011, they were hoping to connect with people who shared their interests in anime, video games, sports, and creating comedic content on culturally relevant topics. Over the years, YouTube has brought together like-minded individuals from all over the world, and it seemed to work the same way for these two Black men from Texas. With the addition of Leland Manigo, Desmond “Des” Johnson, Benjamin “Ben” Skinner, Dylan “Dyl” Patel, and most recently Johnathan “John” Newton, the Real Dreams Change the World crew became complete and gained a place in history as one of the most popular YouTube channels ever. With over 1 billion views and 6.5 million subscribers, RDC World has found an audience online and in real life.

Their annual DreamCon, a gaming and anime convention, has become a significant event, attracting nearly 20,000 people to Austin, Texas. Major brand partners like MTN DEW have joined forces with RDC World to collaborate on this event. Paul Mascali, PepsiCo’s head of esports and gaming, sees DreamCon as a perfect opportunity to connect with a diverse audience and showcase their brand’s work. MTN DEW, for example, has invested in the next generation of Black gamers at HBCUs through its Real Change Challenge, which will award $500,000 in prize money this year.

DreamCon stands out from other conventions because of its inclusive and celebratory atmosphere. RDC World has created a safe space for dreamers, creators, and gamers who often feel marginalized in other conventions. Their authenticity resonates with their audience, and it shows in every aspect of the DreamCon experience. The prevailing message is that everyone belongs here.

BLACK ENTERPRISE had the chance to attend DreamCon and speak with the men behind it. They discussed the challenges of putting together such a large event and the growth they have experienced over the years. They also talked about the increasing acceptance of anime and gaming and the importance of staying true to themselves and their passions.

The friendship between the members of RDC World is foundational to their success. They have been friends for over 12 years and enjoy spending time together outside of work, which helps them stay motivated and push towards success.

The key to RDC World’s longevity lies in the quality of their work. They prioritize creating content that they genuinely enjoy and find funny, ensuring that they maintain their standards.

DreamCon, unlike other conventions, is not controlled by companies. RDC World wants attendees to feel like they are part of the event, rather than just spectators. They have partnered with MTN DEW, a legacy brand in the gaming community, to collaborate on the Real Change Challenge, which supports Black gamers.

Overall, partnering with MTN DEW has been a blessing for RDC World. They appreciate the brand’s dedication to helping Black gamers and working together on a project centered around Mortal Kombat.
