John Mahama Addresses Economic Realities: No Empty Promises on Salary Increments for Teachers

In a candid statement addressing the economic challenges faced by the nation, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has asserted that he cannot promise salary increments for everyone, especially given the current state of the economy.

During a Town Hall meeting in Tamale as part of his ‘Building the Ghana We Want Together Tour,’ Mahama emphasized his commitment to honesty and avoiding promises that cannot be fulfilled, in stark contrast to the approach he attributed to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government led by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Mahama addressed concerns raised by pre-tertiary teachers about the impact of the absence of essential amenities on teaching and learning. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the teaching community but clarified that, given the economic mess, he would not make promises that may prove impractical.

Expressing skepticism about the unfulfilled pledges made by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, Mahama highlighted commitments such as constructing factories and dams in every district that have yet to materialize.

He stated, “I won’t be like those dishonest people who came to promise heaven that they will build factories in every district, they’ll build a dam in every village. I’m not that kind of person. So, I cannot promise you that I’m going to increase your salary.

In response to the difficulties faced by pre-tertiary teachers, Mahama proposed a practical solution. If elected, his administration would focus on providing accommodation support to these teachers. The objective is to motivate them to stay on campus, minimizing unnecessary expenses and creating a conducive environment for optimal performance.

Mahama acknowledged the economic challenges prevailing in the country and highlighted the need for realistic and sustainable solutions. By addressing the concerns of teachers through practical measures, he aims to demonstrate a commitment to governance that is rooted in honesty and a clear understanding of the economic realities facing the nation. The upcoming elections will provide voters with the opportunity to weigh these promises against the backdrop of the country’s economic situation.
